swfIR (swf Image Replacement)

Uncategorized No Comments »

Happy Cog’s Jon Aldinger, Mark Huot, and Dan Mall have published an image replacement method to remove some of the limitations of the standard HTML image object while supporting standards-based design concepts.

Using unobtrusive JavaScript, progressive enhancement, and Flash, swfIR (pronounced “swiffer”) lets designers include high-quality, scalable artwork in user-resizable web layouts—and even add styles to the images.

A nice quiet place to read the news…
FeedHugger is a news aggregator that presents all of your favorite blogs in a novel way. It’s quick, clean and easy to use.

Pick up where you left off…
As you get time to read a few posts, just click the icon to mark the last item you read, as well as all items above it on the page, as read. With FeedHugger, you can read as many or as few items as you have time for without worrying about missing a post. It’s like bookmarking, only cooler.

I have been using Feedhugger for months now and like it. Easy to manage all the feeds that I try to keep up on throughout the day.

Logo Design History – Famous Logos

Design, logos No Comments »

A little history of a bunch of known logos throughout the years.

Apple Logo Design
Based on its company name, they selected an apple as its main form of branding. Initially, the very first logo depicted a small apple shape sitting under a tree with Apple Computer Co set into the frame of the picture. It is this apple that has continued to be used. This initial logo design was perceived to be a bit too complex and hard to view, so Regis McKenna worked on the logo some years later and added a “bite mark” into the apple to symbolise the concept of seduction of the customers and the marketplace in general. The colours of the rainbows were used in this next iteration to form a link with Christian mythology in helping to encourage people to pursue their dreams. While this was not initially a deliberate goal, it did encourage business and consumers to consider the Apple brand for the first time and was successful in generating increased profits.

SuperFlex Lights Coming Soon to a Tent Near You

Design No Comments »

pedot.jpg

I have seen the future of lighting, and it is called SuperFlex. A new, flexible lighting material, the military will start using it in new tents and softwall structures in the near future. It emits light yet is still able to be folded, crushed, or even stabbed and continue pumping out either visible or infrared waves. Easy to transport and durable, these lights are sure to make their way into consumer products such as camping gear in the near future. Sweet. –Adam Frucci

BloomFrame Turns a Window Into a Balcony

architecture No Comments »

Dutch architecture firm Hofman Dujardin has just designed BloomFrame, a window that you can convert into a balcony. It’s like having a convertible in your own home. This is a great idea for those of us who like to practice our barbecue grill artistry, but are reluctant to do so within the confines of our apartments.

Since these window/balconies can be installed in existing buildings, soon it may be time to start pressuring that landlord of yours to put balconies everywhere. This might be a big hit with smokers. If this technology catches on, maybe someday we can all dine or toke al fresco.

Ohio State – 49, Wisconsin – 48, wahoo!!!!

Yes, Wisconsin-Ohio State lost some luster when the Badgers lost Tuesday, but the game still is very important for NCAA Tournament purposes, Jeff Shelman writes.
